Hi Friends,

As I embark on my journey of spending more time in Portugal and planning on closing out my final days in the country that I was born, I find myself rediscovering the wonders of Portugal, immersing myself in its vibrant customs and traditions and understanding the nation's rich cultural tapestry. From the rhythmic dances that echo through the regions to the exquisite craftsmanship of Portuguese tiles, each facet of the country's heritage offers me a glimpse into the soul of Portugal. The county I left as a boy at the age of seven. As I embrace the spirit of discovery, indulging in the flavors, and immerse myself in the beauty of the culture of Portugal, I rediscover the wonders of this enchanting nation; that pulls my heart strings.

Recently I was at a parade in Portugal celebrating Dia da Liberdade, which in Portuguese means Freedom Day, commemorating the revolution. I thought to myself, what if my parents had not immigrated to the United States? Reflecting on an alternative life path, thinking about trade-offs between opportunity, family connection, and a sense of belonging and identity. If we had stayed would I be a business owner, farmer, or a soccer player? Would I live with my parents living off the land, hold a job in a distant region, or another European country? Even after decades of living in the United States and calling this country my home, I continue to have feelings of not belonging, feeling foreign, lonely, and incomplete. Leading me to consider and now actually retuning home, seeking the comfort of a familiar culture and community.

People ask why I created and pour my heart into Aguardente: the answer, I am seeking to share the familiar culture and community of Portugal. At Aguardente I have the opportunity to share with all of you this deep cultural connection I have with my parents, that we carried all the  way across the Atlantic from the home we love.

The traditional songs and dances, delectable sweets, and spirited celebrations, that define Portugal are calling us, whether at Aguardente or a visit to Portugal or the Islands of the Azores, Looking forward to saying hello and sharing stories.
